Winter Is Coming: 5 tips to Winterize Your Home
You may have heard that ‘Winter is Coming.’ (Or if you’re not a Game of Thrones Fan, then maybe you just know from experience) Before you get caught up in Holiday preparations and busy shopping weekends, you should take a day to get your home ready for Winter.
Here Are 5 Easy Ways to Winterize Your Home
1
Insulating your pipes is a crucial step to winterize your home. We have fiberglass wrap insulation, easy to use foam insulation and even electric pipe heating cable. This is an easy project and will save you costly repairs and lots of headaches. Be sure to wrap the insulation around both hot and cold pipes.

On a nice, windy fall day take a walk through your home and check all of your windows and doors for drafts. These small nuisances will add up to costly utility bills. You can seal the drafty window or door by using foam weather stripping or by caulking both the interior and exterior seams. We offer a variety of self-adhesive and nail-on weather stripping from Frost King and M-D Building Products as well as a variety of DAP weather proofing sealants to meet your needs.
3
The easiest weatherization tip is to check the filter on your heater. This should be replaced every 30-60 days depending on use. The more clogged it gets, the less efficient your heating system becomes and the harder it has to work. Come on down to Santee Hardware with your old filter and we’ll help you pick from 3M filters making sure we match the size.

If you have a deck, you’ll want to put a fresh coat of sealer on it so it can withstand the elements. Now for this next project, we suggest grabbing a six pack of your favorite seasonal beer first. Then come down to Santee Hardware to pick up a Purdy brush or roller and some Cabot, Thompsons, Rustoleum, or Flood brand deck sealer. We’ll be able to help you pick out which sealant would work best for you. Before sealing, you’ll want to make sure to clear and clean your deck off to give the sealer a smooth surface.

The winter days are short. This means that you’ll be using your porch and other exterior lights more. Go through and check all of the exterior bulbs. Bring any broken or burnt out ones to us at Santee Hardware and we’ll help you replace them. We have man Sylvania incandescent, halogen and LED bulbs to choose from.
We’d love to hear from you on how you winterize your home or you can tell us all about your favorite seasonal beer. Either way, we’d love to hear from you.
